Open-plan offices are great for quick questions and terrible for hard thinking. The most distracting sound in them isn't loud noise; it's nearby conversation you can half understand. Your brain keeps trying to follow it. Here's how to protect your focus anyway.

1. Mask speech, not just volume

Turning up music to drown out colleagues usually backfires: loud music is tiring and distracting too. The aim is to make nearby speech less intelligible, not to be louder than it. Steady, broadband sound does that best. The Cocoon (above) wraps steady pulses in white noise; Static Peace is gentler white noise with a slow, breathing rhythm.

2. Choose your headphones on purpose

Closed-back or noise-cancelling headphones cut a lot of background noise before you add any sound, so you can keep the volume low. Even a modest pair makes masking much more effective.

3. Pick the right spot

If you can choose where to sit, avoid the walkways, the kitchen and the desks next to people who take a lot of calls. A seat facing a wall also cuts visual distractions, which add up as much as sound does.

4. Signal that you're busy

Headphones on are a common signal, but agreeing on one explicitly with your team works better: a status in your chat app, a small sign, or "deep work blocks" in your shared calendar.

5. Plan around the noise

Most offices have quiet hours, often early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Save your hardest work for those, and use the busy middle of the day for meetings, email and collaboration.

6. Work in defined blocks

Short, defined sessions are easier to protect than an open-ended day. Try 25 to 50 minutes of focus with a focus timer, then take a real break. See how long should a focus session be?

Frequently asked questions

Is white noise or music better in an open office?

Steady noise is better at masking speech. Many people find a soundscape with a noise layer more pleasant for hours, like The Cocoon. See white noise for focus.

What if headphones aren't allowed?

Ask about quiet rooms or booking a meeting room for focus blocks. Earplugs can also help more than people expect.

How loud should my focus sound be?

Just loud enough that nearby conversation becomes hard to follow. If you can't hear your own typing, it's probably too loud.
